Dates: 24 July - 1 September 2024
Location: Senedd Neuadd
Ella Jones is a Welsh artist who specializes in creating interactive artworks that explore the intricacies of tactile perception, textures, and shapes. Play, curiosity, materiality, sustainability, and a deep connection to Welsh culture are central to her artistic expression.
For her artwork, ‘Hooked’, Ella was inspired by the latch hooking technique used to create fluffy, handcrafted textile art.
Her project began as an exploration into the diverse practices surrounding upcycling and reusing fabric that exist across generations and industries in Wales. Ella visited the archives at St Fagans National Museum of History, and key Welsh textile factories such as Trefriw Woollen Mill and The Welsh Quilting Company, Anglesey.
She also collaborated with charity GIDSA, community hub Yr Orsaf, and Galeri Caernarfon to facilitate textile workshops with local communities in North Wales. The workshops spanned different age groups, fostering discussions on how various generations approach upcycling.
The title plays on the technique of hooking yarn onto a mesh canvas and highlights the dedication and patience needed for this time-consuming process. The artwork was crafted with leftover yarn from workshops and donations of scrap fabric.
Join us in the Senedd to explore the artworks from 24 July – 31 August.
‘Hooked’ was made possible through the support of the Art Council Wales Create grant. It was exhibited at Galeri Caernarfon from February – April 2024.
