‘Witnessing Wales’ is a long-term study of community and nationhood, created through a series of journeys across the country. The work contains both landscapes and portraits, the latter made collaboratively with multiple communities; from newly arrived refugees to members of historic choirs.
While documentary in approach, the work conveys the feeling of being in a dream, with images of long summer evenings and dark winter nights, alongside references to Welsh history and folklore.
Ultimately, the work forms an allegorical tale for finding a sense of belonging within the story of Wales today.
Born in 1984 in Alexandria, Egypt, Mohamed moved to Wales in 2007. He studied photography at Carmarthen School of Art, prior to completing a masters in Documentary Photography at the University of South Wales.
Mohamed’s work has been included in several prestigious group exhibitions, including, ‘Facing Britain: British documentary photography since the 1960s’; ‘Many Voices, One Nation’; and ‘The Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize’. His work has been acquired by collections including Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales and the Government Art Collection.
